Travel and Apartments:

You can use www.511.org/ for traveling in the area.  You can find a link for a local hotel list at https://rde.stanford.edu/studenthousing/community-housing.  under the section About the Stanford Area.  I recommend staying near the street El Camino Real if you do not have a car.  Public transportation along that street is very good.   There is no guaranteed housing for postdocs on the campus, unfortunately.

 

It is sometimes difficult to rent an apartment before you arrive but most postdocs are successful in finding a place close to campus.  Most everyone finds housing within a few days of arrival.  Most use Craig's List http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/hhh.  A Stanford site lists rentals and sublets at http://supost.com/.  There are lots of bike paths, particularly in Palo Alto and Menlo Park.  Resources:  https://rde.stanford.edu/studenthousing/housing-resources.

 

While Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Mountain View are the closest to Stanford, Redwood City, Sunnyvale, and cities further out should be considered.  Bus schedules are at http://www.samtrans.com/system_map.html and http://www.vta.org/getting-around/schedules/bus-rail. There is also a train that follows along El Camino Real.  http://www.caltrain.com/stations.html.   As of September 2014, there are substantial discounts for postdocs on train tickets through Stanford.
